Angela joins the UK Screen Team

We are pleased to welcome Angie Cook as our new Membership & Communications Officer. Taking over the role from Ria Carroll, Angie starts full time at UK Screen on Monday 2 July and will be handling day-to-day enquiries, marketing and events.

Consultation on creative sector tax reliefs

Further to the announcement in the 2012 Budget, HM Treasury are seeking consultation on corporation tax reliefs for the animation, high-end television and video games industries. The consultation document is now available for review and will close on 10 September 2012.

The Government will hold two events to discuss the consultation including;

  • An industry focused working group for each of the animation, high-end television and video games industries to progress the design of these new tax reliefs.
  • Stakeholder event to discuss the incentives on Tuesday 10 July 2012. If you would like to attend please register by Wednesday 4 July 2012.

Spaces will be limited to a maximum of two attendees per organisation.

UK Screen will shortly announce dates for a group meeting to discuss the consultation and offer a coordinated membership response.

Looking for Volunteers with Creative Skillset

Creative Skillset looking for volunteers to form a steering group for the National Occupational Standards for Editing.

Creative Skillset are seeking strategic guidance to ensure a revised set of National Occupational Standards describing best practice in Editing is produced. This will also help Creative Skillset to engage with many other Editing Professionals in the industry, not only so they get the Standards right but also because the industry has a vested interest in their future development.

If you want to be a part of this venture the first meeting is Wednesday 4 July at 12-2pm, with a further two meetings to happen between now and December. Please contact Matthew Basham, Partnership Manager at Creative Skillset.    

Brazil Trade Mission

UKTI are currently brainstorming a trade mission to Brazil to coincide with the Rio Film Festival and UK Live. The trade mission will cover film, television and music for both producers and service companies.

UKTI are looking how best to collaborate and work with industry partners and would like to offer the opportunity to take part in the trade mission to UK Screen members. Currently, the proposed mission dates are 24-30 September 2012, starting in San Paulo and moving to Rio as the film festival and music festival are 27-28th September 2012.

UK Screen highlights

  • EC Consultation on State Aid:having worked closely with the BFI, the BFC and representatives from across the film industry UK Screen has responded to the European Commission supporting the BFI’s response to the draft Cinema Communication.
  • BFI Forward Plan: following a meeting of the UK Screen Film working group to discuss our response to the BFI’s forward plan, New Horizons for UK Film, UK Screen has submitted a response to the consultation. Key issues were around the support of the BFC and inward investment, the need to align the education and skills strategies and an emphasis on the new industrial remit of the BFI.
  • Migration Advisory Council: UK Screen is responding to the MAC consultation on Tier 2 codes of practice

Onion Sessions

Our next Onion session on Documentaries is in association with Rushes Soho Shorts with VBS/Vice Magazine onboard to talk about creation and curation of documentaries. Pro Tools|HDX – X Times Better

MediaPros in conjunction with Avid is proud to announce a client focussed event demonstrating the creative powerhouse that is the new ‘Next Generation’ Pro Tools|HDX audio production system.

The event will be held at Halo Post, 25 Noel Street, London, W1F 8GX on Tuesday the 26 June commencing at 7pm, and will feature demos of the latest v10 version of Pro Tools|HDX, showing the awesome power of the system when used for producing Professional Audio for Post-Production and Music Recording. Also on display will be several innovative new ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ solutions that are associated with Pro Tools|HDX.

In addition to the main stage demos, Avid and MediaPros product specialists will be on hand to offer ‘one-to-one’ consultations and free refreshments will be available to all who attend. Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden opens for Business

This month saw the opening of the new Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, a state-of-the-art film and television studio. The £100 million facility is the first of its kind to be built in the UK in 70 years and helps further position the country as a centre of filmmaking excellence. Formally the production home of all eight Harry Potter films, the new studio is spread across a secure 200-acre site and houses a collection of some of the largest sound stages in the UK spanning over a quarter of a million square feet, including one of the largest heated underwater filming tanks in Europe.

The Shining Stars Scheme recognises and rewards non-creative employees within the UK Screen membership; celebrating those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in their role and highlighting their importance within our industry. The scheme runs throughout the year and each month a new Shining Star emerges.
